R is a robust programming language that allows you to process, analyze, and visualize your data from initial exploration to publication. ggplot2 is one of the most popular packages for creating charts, graphs, and maps in R. It is well-supported, highly customizable, and is used broadly in the social and life sciences, statistics, and humanities. 

Participants should have a basic understanding of R, RStudio, and the tidyverse before the session. If you want to learn the basics of R, please see the full list of introductory R workshops hosted by CSCU. It is highly recommended that participants attend the Fundamentals of Data Visualization workshop on October 22 first.  

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to: 

• Use ggplot 2 to explore data distribution, filter, and transform data 

• Create basic visualizations including histograms, bar charts, choropleth and point maps 

• Customize aesthetic and other design details of plots (i.e. color, line weight) 

• Add labels and annotations and export charts
