SUMMARY:Choosing your Research Topic: How to plan for a successful research project
DESCRIPTION:This seminar is designed to get you thinking about
undergraduate research in the social sciences and how to choose a research
topic. Whether you are planning on conducting a research project for your
honors thesis or are just interested in seeing whether research is right
for you\, this seminar will give you a broad overview of the research
process\, especially how to choose a topic. You will also hear from
graduate students from different fields\, who will discuss how they chose
their own research topics.\n\n \n\nThis seminar series is open to Cornell
students from all majors\, but will be especially useful for social science
majors. The recording and further resources will be available on Canvas in
the course Managing Research Data: A Guide to Social Science Research. This
series is presented by Mann Library and Catherwood Library. \n\nGuest
speaker / Panel members: Anne Byrne\, PhD Student\, Applied Economics and
Management in the S.C. Johnson College of Business\, Cathy Lu\, PhD
Student\, Management and Organizations in the S.C. Johnson College of
Business\, and Adam Shumway\, PhD Student\, Department of Economics in the
College of Arts and Sciences. \n\n

SUMMARY:Telling a Story with Data: How to Locate Data for your Research
DESCRIPTION:Now that you have a research topic\, how do you find data for
your research? This seminar will focus on locating social science data as
part of your research process\, as well as telling a story using data. We
will look at some Cornell datasets and GIS resources\, to give you some
examples of storytelling using existing data. \n\n \n\nThis seminar series
is open to Cornell students from all majors\, but will be especially useful
for social science majors. The recording and further resources will be
available on Canvas in the course Managing Research Data: A Guide to Social
Science Research. This series is presented by Mann Library and Catherwood
Library. \n\nGuest speaker: Keith Jenkins\, GIS & Geospatial Applications
 Librarian

SUMMARY:Collaborating with Data: Tools for Data-Focused Group Projects
DESCRIPTION:When working with others\, it is important to have a clearly
defined system for collaboration\, especially when working with data. In
this seminar\, we will discuss how to use collaboration tools that you
already have access to in order to store and organize your data and notes
to make your collaborations as smooth as possible.\n\n \n\nThis seminar
series is open to Cornell students from all majors\, but will be especially
useful for social science majors. The recording and further resources will
be available on Canvas in the course Managing Research Data: A Guide to
Social Science Research. This series is presented by Mann Library and
Catherwood Library. \n\nGuest speaker: Wendy Kozlowski\, Data Curation
 Specialist at Olin Library.

SUMMARY:Organizing your Data: How to Organize\, Share\, and Replicate your Research
DESCRIPTION:You have your data - now\, how do you organize it? Making your
data reusable for other researchers is an important part of the research
process. We will discuss some strategies for finding a manageable scale for
your thesis or project. You'll also hear from Florio Arguillas from CISER\,
who will share some ideas for organizing your data so it can be shared with
others.\n\n \n\nThis seminar series is open to Cornell students from all
majors\, but will be especially useful for social science majors. The
recording and further resources will be available on Canvas in the course

SUMMARY:Citing Data: How to Cite Data for your Research Project
DESCRIPTION:Whether you've found already existing data for your research
project\, or are doing original research\, it is important to cite your
data just like you would cite a book or journal article. We will review the
Joint Principles of Data Citation as well as some common data citation
standards and pitfalls. You'll also hear from Lars Vilhuber\, Executive
Director of the Labor Dynamics Institute at Cornell and Data Editor for the
American Economic Association\, who will discuss the importance of data
citation for replication and publication.\n\n \n\nThis seminar series is

SUMMARY:Codebooks: How to Find\, Read\, and Write a Codebook
DESCRIPTION:The codebook might be one of the most important pieces of any
dataset that you work with during your research. Whether you use already
existing data or are performing original research\, knowing how to read and
write a codebook is an important part of the research process. We will
discuss some best practices for codebook creation\, and will practice
creating our own with a simple dataset. \n\n \n\nThis seminar series is
open to Cornell students from all majors\, but will be especially useful
for social science majors. The recording and further resources will be
available on Canvas in the course Managing Research Data: A Guide to Social
Science Research. This series is presented by Mann Library and Catherwood
Library. \n\nGuest speaker: Lynda Kellam\, the Senior Data Librarian at the
Cornell Institute for Social and Economic Research (CISER).
